With rear access, generous space and an external studio, the back garden of this renovated Californian bungalow in Bronte presented an incredible opportunity while requiring significant work. Passionate about food and entertaining, our clients requested a considered design that would extend the floor plan of their house, offering different spaces for outdoor cooking, dining and relaxing, as well as a productive kitchen garden.

The back of the house opened up onto an entertaining terrace which was hot and exposed while also being very rundown. The terrace above was in a similar state, requiring stabilisation and a balustrade to ensure building safety standards were met. Walls needed to be reinforced, tired planting removed and shade installed to create pleasant and inviting garden spaces that could be enjoyed by our clients and their friends year round.

We completely refurbished the entertaining terrace, installing crazy paving and a series of cascading planter boxes that reinforced the wall of the upper terrace and created an abundant green wall of layered, textured planting visible from within the house. A barbeque was installed in the space, along with garden lighting and an elegant outdoor furniture set from Tait.

Gentle stairs lead to the upper terrace where a productive vegetable garden in raised planters now thrives. Alongside it, a pergola was built to offer shade from the harsh summer sun, providing an additional outdoor seating area separate from the main living spaces below.

Elegant and stylish, this new garden now offers a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor living, with ample space for entertaining and quiet, peaceful places to retreat.
